Mohamed Elmasry

Over the past 40 years, Mohamed Elmasry, Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo, has made seminal and outstanding contributions to semiconductor device research and integrated circuit design through his extraordinary  innovation, creativity and leadership. In fact, his work has put Canada on the global map of digital semiconductor and VLSI research. One of his students is the co-CEO of RIM (Research in Motion).

He has published over 500 papers (most cited by experts in the field and some nominated or awarded best paper honours) and 16 books, and has 12 patents to his credit. He has graduated many of Canada’s top students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including faculty members at Canadian and international universities as well as senior management and technical personnel at R&D laboratories throughout Canada and the world. Mohamed Elmasry is the founding director of the University of Waterloo’s VLSI Research Group. He has been awarded Canada’s industrial research chair and was a strategic grant holder for several years with both Nortel and RIM. He has served as chair, editor, guest editor, panelist, invited speaker, guest lecturer, and keynote speaker for numerous technical journals and at conferences in more than 40 countries.

Mohamed Elmasry’s excellent scholarly work and contributions to the development of digital semiconductor devices and the design of integrated circuits were recognized through many awards including being named a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers. Tonight, we are pleased to add the title
EIC Fellow to this prestigious list.
