Professor Abdul Quddus Khan Passes Away

Professor Mohammed Abdul Quddus Khan, who was going to be a moderator for one of the AMSE sessions, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Prof. Khan was an eminent scholar, professor at The University of Illinois at Chicago, Dept of Biological Sciences, and an active member of Muslim community in Chicago.
Prof. Khan obtained his Ph.D. in 1964 from the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. His thesis research was on the genetics of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes. He spent four years as a post-doctorate at North Carolina State University, Oregon State University, and Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey. He joined UIC in 1969 to teach animal physiology and do research in environmental toxicology. During his stay there he also spent a year at N.I.H. (1975-76) as a Visiting Scientist, and one year at UAE University (1992-93) as a Fulbright Scholar. Besides these, he spent summers at University of Wisconsin, Madison (1970), USEPA (1980), Corvallis, Oregon, and two 2-month periods with United Nations Development Program.
His laboratory has been involved in research in environmental toxicology. This has included several aspects of eco-toxicology and health effects of environmental chemicals, especially chlorinated cyclodiene insecticides, heavy metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. At a meeting on June 23, AMSE officers approved a resolution to dedicate this year’s AMSE sessions at ISNA to his memory.
